Elk Island National Park of Canada

Elk Island National Park is located in Alberta Canada 35 minutes or so east of Edmonton. The park is open year round and does charge for entry. You can pay per person or buy a park pass if you plan to come more than once. The fee they charge is well worth it in my opinion. Please check out the Elk Island parks Canada website for prices as they may change. You can also get a parks Canada pass that works for Jasper & Banff National Parks as well if you plan on traveling to them as well.

The park offers wonderful wildlife experiences. Even though it’s called Elk Island National Park the main attraction in terms of wildlife is the wild Bison. There are hundreds in the park. They have the Plains Bison and Wood Bison. In the area where you can dive and the Bison are on the roads… these are the Plains Bison. If you drive just outside of the south gate to highway 16 you usually can spot the Wood Bison which are the largest Bison on the planet, they usually can be found near the fences when going east on the highway. There are plenty of other animals including elk, deer, wolf, coyote, beaver, 250 different bird species and many other creatures.

SUGGESTION: If you want to see the bison, elk and most other animals in the park. You should come on a cloudy/cool day and if your only coming to see the animals the best times would be in the early morning and in the evening a couple hours before dark.

There are also a bunch of good hiking trails. They range in size and intensity but if you are in reasonable condition you should should be able to walk most of the trails. You can also camp or RV in the park for a fee, we haven’t camped in the park as of yet but it looked decent. You can also canoe and swim. Please be careful and make sure to check with a park attendant or read the posted bulletins on the Elk National Park bulletin for safety of the Astotin Lake water. They can have outbreaks of blue-green algae which can be dangerous for pets and humans.

Check out our groups to see what other info on the park we have posted as well as other community members. You can also post about your experiences at the park! We would love to hear from you. Please use the report wildlife sighting when you encounter wildlife in the park. Elk Island has good cell reception so its perfect for reporting where they are so everyone can enjoy.
